The following five cities have been named the 2011 Spring Allergy Capitals by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America:
- Chattanooga, TN
- Knoxville, TN
- Louisville, KY
- Charlotte, NC
- Jackson, MS
I thought we had it bad here in Connecticut, but at least we didn't get the distinction of being the worst! I don't even have allergies (or so I thought) but I've been suffering as though I do have allergies. For the past two weeks, it's been nothing but itchy eyes, stuffed head, sore throat, congestion, etc.
The National Allergy Bureau tracks pollen and mold levels in 85 locations throughout the country (two in Canada) and has said that the pollen levels have very high concentrations this year, which is creating havoc among those with asthma, allergies, and without known allergies.
In Connecticut, most of the pollen is coming from birch, oak, and maple trees, while more southern states are getting high levels from walnut, pine, and willow trees. You can get information about your region from The National Allergy Bureau website.
They also have some helpful hints for managing your reactions to the pollen and mold spores, but here's a few facts that I didn't know:
- Pollen levels are highest between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., so don't sleep with the windows open.
- If you mow the lawn, wear a mask because it kicks up more pollen.
- Don't hang your laundry on the line during high pollen times; tree pollen is very sticky and will adhere to your clothes, sheets, etc.
Happy Spring!
