Take Time to Stop and Smell the Flowers!
That's a nice sentiment, but it's a little unrealistic most days. That's why I really appreciate it when those flowers just reach out and make you stop dead in your tracks as if they are saying "Stop, damn it, and smell this beautiful fragrance of mine!"

I might have missed it this year, except that I realized that I hadn't turned off the hose that I had let drip on some newly transplanted plants. I was already trying to squeeze in task number six on a to-do list of 20, and I knew that I had to race to get everything done. As I ran up the path to the back yard to shut off the water, the flowers of my climbing hydrangea ambushed me! Such a beautiful smell. I vowed I would take time at the end of the day to really appreciate them for the few days out of the year that they are in bloom.
I had planted the climbing hydrangea about ten years ago. I had seen it on one of the garden tours I took and couldn't believe what a striking plant it was. It will climb over rock walls, chimneys, or trellises. I was trying to disguise an ugly chain link fence and it did the job beautifully. Today, you can't even see the fence. For a climber, it's pretty controllable so you can just chop it where you don't want it to grow. Take the pieces you chop off, set them in shallow dirt, and they will easily grow in their new place.
A very rewarding plant.
