Follow-Up to My Dishwasher Dilemma

Follow-Up to My Dishwasher Dilemma!

Last week I wrote a post about problems that I was having with my dishwasher not cleaning my dishes.  My dishes came out of the dishwasher with a chalky feel that felt like fingernails on a chalkboard.  I had been using Cascade with Dawn powder, and I saw hundreds of complaints about this product.  Some people even replaced their dishwashers because they thought the dishwasher was not doing its job.

Upon researching the problem, I discovered that the problem was that phosphates are no longer allowed to be used in dishwasher detergents.  If you have hard water, the phospate-free formula exacerbates the problem.  So in fairness, it's not just Cascade that is the culprit; there are probably other brands of powder dishwasher detergents that produce the problem as well.

Phospates are not good for the environment, and I am a bona-fide treehugger.  But I want clean dishes!  I have hard water and don't want a water softening system.  But I want clean dishes!  How many brands of dishwasher would I have to try until I found one that worked?  I felt this could be an expensive road as I bought one dishwasher detergent after another.

Up & Up Dishwasher Detergent

I was in Target (one of my favorite stores in the world) looking at all the choices of dishwashing detergents.  Cascade is a major brand, and I wanted to stay away from it because I had so many problems with it.  But on the shelf was Target's own brand, Up & Up, priced ridiculously cheap at $2.79 for 75 ounces.  I figured if it didn't work, I was only out $2.79 (compared to $5-$6 for the name brand options).

I poured the liquid into the dishwasher with much trepidation, waited anxiously while the dishwasher went through its cycle, opened the door as if a rat would escape, reached tentatively for a plate, and YIKES!!!  It was squeaky clean! Wonderful!

I just thought I would pass this on.  If you have had the same problem with your dishwasher (it was one of my most read blogs), there is a solution.  Not only is there a solution, but it is a very well-priced solution.  Even if you don't have problems with your dishwasher, you might want to try Target's Up & Up for the price!

I love Target!
