Update to NO MORE PHONE BOOKS!
Yesterday I wrote a post on NO MORE PHONE BOOKS about the wasteful distribution of phone books that few people use. Based on the comments I received, it seems that many people simply pick them up off their driveways and deposit them directly in recycling--just as I thought.
However, one of the responses that I received was from Matt Krug, Associate Manager of Distribution Recycling & Logistics for Yellowbook. He addressed three issues that I had brought up in my post:
- My town does not allow phone books to be put into the recycling bin; they must be brought in person directly to the box at the town dump.
- Producing phone books that no one wants is a huge waste of resources and not environmentally-friendly.
- There should be an opt-in solution for people who want copies of phone books.
He called the town of Manchester to see why they don't recycle the phone books. The town referred him to the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority and he is following up with them to see why they won't accept the phone books, which are recyclable.
He also informed me that Yellowbook uses recycled paper, soy-based ink, and vegetable-based glue. He also agreed that it is not in the company's best interests to be spending money on books that people don't want, so he referred me to their OPT-OUT site so that people could choose to not receive the books for as long as they live at their current address.
While I think that an OPT-IN choice would be more effective, I told him that I would post this update and let people know about the OPT-OUT site.
It's not a perfect solution, but I appreciated his responsiveness and professionalism. So for those who do not want to receive a Yellowbook phone book, here is the OPT-OUT site. I just completed mine and was able to opt-out of all the phone books (five) that I was scheduled to receive!
