A Green Solution for Tick and Insect Control

A Green Solution for Tick and Insect Control

Guinea Hens

Yesterday, I was taking a walk around my neighborhood and was stunned to see a group of what I thought might be turkeys of some sort in one of the yards a few streets down from my house.  I live in a residential area so I am always surprised when I see wildlife.

The owner was in his front yard so I asked him if they were his animals, to which he replied that they were.  Then I asked him what they were, and he told me they were guinea hens and that they eat all sorts of insects, including ticks.  He added that they do a great job of keeping insects under control.Pesticides

Anyone who lives in Connecticut knows that we have a problem with ticks.  The usual treatment often involves harsh pesticides that come with a warning to keep animals and children away from the areas where the pesticides have been applied.  In fact, during this same walk, I saw two signs for such a chemical treatment.

One of the problems with using pesticides is that they are harmful for birds and beneficial insects that can keep the harmful insects under control.  Pesticides can throw the balance of nature way out of whack.  Plus they are not healthful for young children to be around.

So when my neighbor told me he was using guinea hens instead of pesticides to control ticks and other insects, I had to check it out.  Sure enough, there were tons of articles that extolled the virtues of guinea fowl; I felt as though I must be the last to know this!

Of course, anyone who is considering using this green solution for tick and insect control would have to check with their town to see if they can keep guinea fowl in their yard, but it sounds like it could be a great option that is certainly better than using pesticides to protect your pets and children from ticks.
