Happy Thanksgiving!
To me, Thanksgiving is the best holiday because it is a time to think about what we are grateful for. Instead of focusing on what we don't have, we pause to cherish what we do have. There is no crazy gift-giving; we give the gift of sharing food and time.
Thanksgiving is also the best time to think about people who don't have all that we do. There are plenty of opportunities to contribute money, food, and time to help ease the burden so that they might have a nicer Thanksgiving too.
In our family, we have had massive SRO buffets and small sit-down dinners. Regardless of the number, we think about the people who are not with us and we are happy to have those who are there.
This year, our gathering will be small, but we will enjoy our day nonetheless. In our house, some of the dishes are the traditional ones that everyone agrees must be made, like the Butterhorn Rolls that my family has made since my childhood in the Midwest and that now I can only justify eating once a year. Some are the traditions of my husband's family, like his Italian stuffing that everyone who has ever eaten it raves about. Some are new dishes from when my children were vegans or vegetarians that have stayed on the menu because they were so delicious, like the Wild Rice Salad or the Pear and Red Onion Gratin. The menu and the number of guests may change slightly from year to year, but our thankfulness does not.
Whatever your tradition, whatever favorite foods you enjoy, whomever you spend the day with--I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, with plenty of time for reflecting, sharing with others, and enjoying the day.
