Where are your charitable contributions going?
We are in the midst of the giving season. The upcoming holiday season is sure to present us with plenty of opportunities to help others, and most people increase their donations this time of year, whether it is to local food banks, churches, or the causes that come through the mail.
We all have our favorite charities; some of mine are local and others are national organizations that send me information in the mail. Some I send money to without fail; others strike a chord on one day and not the next. I haven't really thought about where the money goes, and I believed that most of it must be going to the ones who need it most.
Then I came across a website, American Institute of Philanthropy, a charity watchdog whose purpose is to make sure that people make informed decisions about their donations. The website is a wealth of unbiased information; it provides a list of most efficient charities, top salaries, complaints, and current urgencies. It changed my priorities because one of my favorite charities didn't really do a very good job of getting the money to the people who needed it.
On the other hand, I realized that all the turkeys that are being donated at some of the grocery stores in our area for various organizations will go to those who really need them.
The need is great this year, and we all want to make sure that our donations go as far as possible. Whether you give to local organizations or to national charities, find out where the money is going so you can increase your effectiveness. Happy Holidays!
