The Merry Month of May!
The past few days have been glorious! We have had spring-like temperatures, startling blue skies, and very low humidity. The sun makes the grass and the emerging plants the greenest green, and it feels wonderful to take in the sights, unwind a bit, and let your thoughts flow freely.
But is there anything more spring-like than the smell of lilacs? Experts say that our olfactory memories are the strongest and the most resistant to memory loss, and I think that is true.
Yesterday, I decided to take a long walk in the morning and as I was passing by my neighbor's house, the smell of lilacs just hit me. All at once, I was transported back to early elementary school days (a long, long time ago!) and thoughts of May came rushing in: Bouquets of lilacs plucked on the way to school and given to teachers, the dizzying smell of lilacs in a warm classroom, the dreamlike states because it was too warm to concentrate, watching the clock and willing it to move faster. From there, I thought about childhood friends, games we used to play, and how uncomplicated life seemed to be. It was a fun excursion back into the past...and all brought on by the smell of lilacs.
