When he is on a rafting trip, Ted finds a young dog less than a year old and surviving on his own in the Utah desert. The dog accompanies him on his trip and returns home with him to Wyoming.
In part, Merle's Door is about their growing relationship, but it's more than just a love story between dog and owner. The riveting part of the book is the author's in-depth discussion of the evolution of dogs, the research that supports the theories, and why dogs and humans can be the perfect partnership.
He also writes about the natural intelligence of dogs that is more developed when a dog must think on his own, hence the subtitle, Lessons from a Freethinking Dog.
If you own a dog, you will never look at him or her in the same way again--and you will appreciate your dog all the more.
