Would you like to live in a number?
I was driving behind a truck today and noticed that it is from Eighty Four, PA! I don't know that I have ever seen a town listed as a number but there must be others out there. So I did a little research.
I checked out the town on Google, and the origin of the name is obscure. It may have been named after Grover Cleveland's win in 1884 or it might have the mile marker on the railroad that runs through it. It also might have named Eighty-Four because that was the year that the post office was built in the town.
According to Wikipedia, there is also a Ninety Six, South Carolina and an Eighty Eight, Kentucky.
It just doesn't sound that exciting, but then neither does Dull, Ohio or Boring, Oregon. But I guess a number is better than Fleatown, Ohio, Mosquitoville, Vermont, or Grasshopper Junction, Arizona. It's also a little less non-committal than Whynot, Mississippi.
Oh well, at least people will talk about these towns. How much conversation does your town's name generate?
