Stay Cool with Watermelon!
It's going to be 99 degrees here in Connecticut today! We are not quite used to these high temperatures yet, so it's going to take time to acclimate. But one thing that helps me deal with the heat is watermelon!
I have already bought several this season and they have been extra-delicious this year for some reason. I love to cut the melon in half and eat it with a spoon! But if I have to share, I slice the melon and cut it into cubes to store in the refrigerator. It's really easy to grab a few bites whenever the urge strikes. Nothing makes me feel cooler than eating watermelon.
Here's a few facts about watermelon:
- There are about 200-300 varieties produced in the U.S. and Mexico, but we tend to eat only about 50 of them.
- In the U.S., we eat more watermelon (by weight) than any other melon.
- Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, and Arizona are the leading watermelon producers (thanks!) but watermelon is produced in 44 states.
- Seedless watermelons outsell seeded watermelons now, although people will say that the seeded ones are sweeter and juicier.
- Watermelon has high levels of lycopene, so it's a great anti-oxidant food. It is also high in vitamins A, B6, and C.
- When picking a watermelon, it should feel heavy for its size because it's 92% water. Also look for a yellow side which means it sat in the sun and ripened.
