Peggy Chirico ~ Hartford & Tolland County Real Estate Blog: Fun with a Can of Spray Paint

Fun with a Can of Spray Paint

Fun with a Can of Spray Paint

Maybe winter is a little long here, but this weekend I decided that I needed a few fun projects to engage my creative spirit.  What's better than a can of spray paint?

If you are looking for some low-cost home improvement ideas, think about what you can do with a can of spray paint.

How many things can you paint with a can of spray paint?  Apparently, quite a few.

First, I removed all the cabinet hardware in my kitchen, scrubbed them well with vinegar and water, dried them thoroughly, and painted them with Rustoleum Hammered Metal (Silver finish).  My cabinets look rejuvenated and the hardware looks like new.

Second, I spraypainted some picture frames that just didn't look that good after I repainted the bathroom. With a fresh coat of the hammered silver finish, the frames really compliment the photographs and my bathroom looks quite chic.

Third, I was about to throw out an old gold-tone basket(you know how everyone hates that color now!) that I had used for toiletries in the bathroom.  But then, armed with the spray paint, I gave it new life and it looks great with the picture frames.Spray Paint

Next, I will repaint a gold-tone wreath that is looking a little dated and maybe even try painting a lamp base.

For low-cost home improvements, try a can of spray paint.  For five dollars, you can get an updated look on hardward and accessories and have fun doing it.  All in all, a very satisfying day.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  Use spray paint only in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask.  The fumes are pretty noxious and you don't want that in your lungs.  It's hard to find a space that is well-ventilated in the winter, but I was able to use my garage which was warm enough.  I opened the door while I was spraying and then moved the pieces into the house to dry.

Peggy, oh, I love spray paint! You are so right, it just is amazing when you realize the things you can do with it. I have found that the "Fusion" spray paint works really well on wood, sticks forever. Sticks forever on anything actually!

I'm looking at your gmail address and new website by the way. :D

Hi Andrea - Thanks! I'll have to try Fusion - have you used it on furniture?  My progress is slow in the website area--hoping to pick up speed there!

Peggy... You are so creative.  Did you do that all in one weekend?  That sounds like a project for me for a whole year :)  I'm slooooooooow, hee hee

Hi Christina - That's what is fun about spray paint--it's instant results!  And once you start, you can't stop!

Hi Peggy--Great projects. Cans of spray paint are my best friends.  I can't think of anything I haven't thought about painting!

Peggy, I have no sense of adventure like that. I need to be more creative.

Hi Janet - It's really fun, isn't it?  I already have my next blog planned on painting!

Hi Connie - I'm sure you have a sense of adventure.  Maybe paint just isn't your medium!!!

It’s always amazing how the simple things in life that don’t cost much can result in so much fun!

Peggy, you were a wild woman with that spray paint!  Sounds like you had a good time and have some new looking stuff around your home.  Hopefully it will warm up soon or everything in the house will get a coat of paint.  Cool post.

Hi Russel - Nice hearing from you! I agree--simple is best!

Hi Barbara - That's funny! But you are right, if winter hangs around too long, there's just no telling what will happen!

I love, love, love spray paint. I'm a bit of a fanatic, if someone in the neighborhood needs a little squirt and don't want to buy a can, they come to me first. I spray painted all my gold door knobs with the hammered pewter about five years ago, with no pre-treatment. A few are just now beginning to show a little wear.

Peggy, I have used Fusion on many projects, wood furniture, etc. It looks fantastic and it is very durable! And boy oh boy is spraying something easier than getting out the brush.. etc.

FYI, I was just happy to see you were using a gmail account, based on our conversations. And slow is just fine, I am often overwhelmed with all the work. I put up my Wordpress blog when I was home for 2 weeks sick last year, LOL. Of course I had to make a lot of adjustments after. When one is sick... ones mind is not always the sharpest should I say!

Hi Joetta - I will have to try spraying the door knobs.  We started replacing them but we still have quite a few to go--maybe it will be easier to just spray paint them.

Hi Andrea - I will have to try Fusion.  I painted a few pieces of furniture and the tops are always a little sticky so I can't put anything on them.  And yes I took your advice and switched over to gmail.  I think your websites look amazing, by the way.

Peggy--I was wondering how you did this in winter until I got to the last line of the post.  Glad you painted in the garage.  I usually wait till warmer weather & go outside with the can.

Hi Mary - Yes, ventilation is key!  I love the driftwood--I hadn't thought of that!  Maybe we should start a blog on 101 objects you can spraypaint!!!  And thanks for the reblog!

P)eggy, you were very productive, and things do look refreshed with a new coat of paint.    Spray paint is fun, and does not take as long as brushing!

Hi Peggy,

My mother in law spray painted one of those cheap builder-grade brass-plated chandeliers a muted black.  Unbelievable transformation!  It has a classic colonial charm now.

Hi Lisa - Great idea! I wondered how it would work to spray paint brass. I might just have to try it.

What a great way to quickly and easily switch up the style/mood of a room. Thanks for sharing, Peggy.

Hi Ilyce - I think change is a good thing! And spray paint is an inexpensive fix. Thanks.
